3-Day Life Drawing Workshop

This 3-day life drawing course is aimed at all levels of drawing ability and experience.

Course Description

This three-day life drawing course is aimed at all levels of drawing ability and experience. It will build on the essential foundation of responding to the world before you, improving observational drawing skills, and application of material and media. We will engage with a broad range of approaches, from traditional to experimental, to fully explore the potential of the human figure and related drawing techniques.

This course includes structured workshops, as well as opportunities for self-directed drawing and collaborative exercises. Throughout the three days you will be encouraged to discuss and share your outcomes with the group, to reflect on new approaches and progress.

Example course structure

• Day 1: Movement and motion – this day will explore capturing the body in space and time. Through a series of fast paced exercises, participants will produce single and sequential life drawings that depict gesture, direction and motion.
• Day 2: Form and structure – the second day will consider how the body is built up and how we can use mark-making to define shapes and shadows within the body. Participants will experiment with a variety of media to challenge how we depict light, shadow and form.
• Day 3: Essence and character – on the final day, we will think about how we can capture emotion and character through life drawing. Using a range of props and prompts, participants will look at how we can use decision-making to tell a story and depict a character's essence.
