Course Description

Introduction to Bookbinding is a one-day course for anyone who wants to learn to make handcrafted books using traditional tools and techniques. During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to fold and manipulate paper by learning three versatile book structures: the pamphlet, the hard back concertina, and the Japanese stab binding. Participants will learn an accessible, inexpensive way to produce their own sketchbooks, gifts, or artists' books. This introduction also aims to provide the practical knowledge to start a self-publishing project by discussing print production, paper stocks, best printing methods based on quantity, size and binding style and file preparation.

This course introduces bookbinding as a set of accessible skills that don’t require expensive equipment, teachings fundamentals that will empower anyone to create their own publications.

Example Course Structure:

We will start by getting to know bookbinding tools and equipment, different paper stocks and their uses, and recognising the paper's grain direction. The first book we will create will be a pamphlet. We will fold paper, cut it and assemble the pages for sewing. After trimming the pamphlets, we will move onto a Japanese stab-binding style book: this will consist of a stack of sheets folded and sewn on the outside. Finally, we will fold long strips of paper for a concertina. This will have hard covers, covered in book cloth. At the end of the day we will discuss designing and producing a book, with some tips on choosing materials, prepping files for printing and cost effective ways to print a publication.
